"This is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affectations glow and valor is reborn, when the shadows deepen along the edge of the forest and we believe that, if we watch carefully, at any moment we may see the unicorn."

Animal Wednesday - Bumble Bees! Bzzzzz..

I thought I would do a post on these little ones....my dear friend Ann, who lives North of me, is quite the expert on Bees....and gave me a sweet little lecture about them the other day before we departed to the opera. I found this first clip (narrated by Sir David Attenborough) fascinating.... nature, truly is a wonder and full of little miracles.

And.....you KNOW I had to include a musical portion too.....so, here is Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Flight of the Bumblebee"!

Bzzz.....Bzzzz......HAW! Bzzz......

  1. That's really cool seeing the daff's and bees in ultra-violet light. I love bees too, the wax they produce has so many uses and of course the honey and comb and pollen all have healing uses for humans. Wish i had the upbeat bee energy of that music. Beee well, love Suki

  2. What a delightful post!!!!!
I enjoyed both video's. In the first I learned new facts about the bumble bee, which made me aprreciate this magical creature even more.
And the second was also fun. I have a different version of this one here at home, but this one was nice to hear as well. I love it that in this piece you can actually see the bee fly in your imagination. Such a clever musical piece!
    Thanks for these little pleasures!

  5. One of these days, when we get high-speed here at the farmlet... sigh. But thanks for posting about our beloved BEES... I bet there's no bee as glorious as the Queen Bombus vosnesenskii that we saw last week near your home -- she and her kids were beauts! Yay bees of all kinds,
    xo, Trixie

  8. I love bees too. I have 4 different types queing up to check on the lavender. It's a bit late this year and they are keeping an eye on it. As soon as it starts to open the hedge will be a mass of different bees. Never been stung though even when I am taking some lavender myself.

  9. How odd. The weekend before last I went to a piano recital with my mum (when I actually wanted to watch the soccer on TV). Rimsky Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee was the last piece ... played beautifully by a young chap who looked like he was only 14 but was probably much older.

Bubble and bumblebee. These are my two favourite words. I can't help but smile when I say them.

When I was first studying engineering we had to do some mathematical derivations to proove that the bumblebee cannot fly! The aerodynamics are impossible. Ha ha ha. Nature is much smarter than simple engineers! I love that fact.

Oh and Robin I have been listening to the Wagner set I pinched off my mum as promised. OK ... it is very different to the Verdi/Puccini light and breezy approach. But OMG, the intensity, the drama. Just wonderful. Thank you for steering me off the beaten track :) xx Jos

  11. Marianne, I am always happy when you stop to visit! Aren't bees wonderful and magical!

Rimsky-Koraskov is a favourite of mine....such a versatile composer... his "Scherazade" was one of my Ex's and mine "special pieces of music".... but the bee one..shows a completely different and enchanting side!

  16. Lo, you KNOW me so well - already..... I was so caught up in the ultraviolet info from Sir "A", I took a chance and hoped everyone would enjoy it!

You must play the musical video! The composer's name is Rimsky-Korsakov....a hyphenated last name. My Godmother, a classical pianist, name her two cats - "Rimsky" and "Korsakov". Ha-ha!

    Loved her....love you!

  17. Dear Melanie, I am not surprised yoo love and understand bees.... England is so green - in all ways....and people there have realised for centuries what a amazing and necessary creature the bee is. (Not to mention Eric Idle's "Eric the Half-Bee" song.....I almost included it.....

    Love,

  18. Joss.... you are so RIGHT..."bubble" and "bumblebee" are too smile-producing nouns!!!! And, Nature IS much smarter than engineers!!!!!

Ah, Jos......I am beyond happy that you have delved into the world of my beloved Wagner.... his music is definitely not that of Verdi and Puccini (although they both borrowed from him).... he did understand human fraility and love, and betrayal and well....us.

Sending you many hugs for having the courage and heart to "test the Wagner Waters"....

    Love,

    ♥ Robin ♥

  21. Hello Robin, I've just come from soulbrush's blog. Reading your profile, you could be me! My father was a timpani and percussionist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, so I was brought up with opera and ballet and opera is still my great love.

What did you go and see? Placido Domingo was on tv tonight in a performance from Covent Garden of Simon Boccanegra (not sure of spelling). What a voice he has.

I love bees and we do what we can to plant bee attracting plants. Like you, I am a little wary of them! Good to meet you.

  22. I am a bad friend. Why haven't I been here already?
And guess what? I'm here and I haven't listened to either videos!!!

I WILL, but I have to say hello first. And tsup! And mwah!

    Okay now I'll go listen.

Did I tell you I think you are one cool bug for spotlighting the bumblebee?

But what's next? I think you should offer a series of music to fool around by. And keep going from there...

I am lessening the dignity of your fine blog, but I did try to avoid swear words and strong action verbs

    :)

  25. BT - welcome! What an interesting life you have had. Covent Garden is one of my favourite houses for Opera (and Ballet). "Placi" does indeed have a wonderful voice....plus he can act! He will be here this Autumn to open our season after a 16 year hiatus!

I am pleased you are a B-lover too... these little ones are decreasing in great numbers around the world....and we all need to do as much as we can to keep their species flourishing!

    Again, welcome!

    Hugs,

    ♥ Robin ♥
