"This is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affectations glow and valor is reborn, when the shadows deepen along the edge of the forest and we believe that, if we watch carefully, at any moment we may see the unicorn."

Riding Through the Carousel of Time...

The one-and-only- Lolo, did a post a few weeks ago on a Carousel.....
it inspired me, to go out in the cold and misty SF "Summer" and photograph "my" Carousel.  The current Carousel was built in 1914 by the Herschell-Spillman Company and operated at amusement parks in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, before it was installed in Golden Gate Park in 1940 after a stint at the World's Fair on Treasure Island. It was shut down in 1977 and restored, reopening in 1984. The Carousel's 62 colorfully painted menagerie animals include a dragon, camel, stork, and goat as well as horses, frogs, dogs, roosters, and pigs. Painted panels inside the Carousel depict Bay Area landscapes.  As a child, my Father took me there every Sunday...I had a favourite "Steed"...and always ran to "claim" him as "mine".  I find it incredible that a place where I found joy as a child still exists for children today....the thought just makes me smile...

This woman waved, thinking I was photographing her....but, it is the Armoured Steed in front of her...he was, still is "My" Charger!  A-ha-ha!

One thing I particularly love is the variety of animals to choose to ride on.... Tigers....Frogs....  (above, far left and a second favourite of mine to ride), Roosters (see below, far left),

Some of the hand-painted scenes inside the Carousel...

All this magic encased within....

I hope you enjoy this little journey into my childhood....

Love,

♥ Robin ♥

  2. It is certainly a beauty with all the different animals. There is a place in Wisconsin that has an old carousel and many animals saved from others. Very neat place.
Fun being a child with you.

  4. Wow Robin, this is quite a beauty! And I love your steed, the most handsome one in the crowd!

  6. What a beautiful Carousel. I always loved the Carousel as a child growing up in Germany. Back then it was smaller and had just horses, but I love horses and enjoyed sitting on them since I didn't have a real horse of my own (but always wanted one!)

I was always a big amusement park fan, loving all the rides, especially the wild and crazy ones, but there's something stead fast, mystical and metaphorical about the Carousel, isn't there?

It's almost impossible for me to imagine seeing or touching anything or anyone from my childhood, so it must be a fantastic experience for you to see that some things do remain the same.

Danke schoen fuer Deinen Besuch. Heute nachmittag bake ich den Birnen Streusel pie und dann poste ich die Bilder an meinem Blog... schade, dass Du nicht zum Kaffee kommen kannst!

    Alles Gute und Auf Wiedershen,
    Doris (und Gizzy)

  12. Liebe Doris....I always wanted a horse of my own too! But though *my* Steed was an armoured Knight's Horse, I also loved riding the Frog and the Rooster (go figure)...

I have seen photos of German Carousels.... just gorgeous!!! And I DO understand how faint your childhood memories must be.... yet, they still live on in your heart - because you have not lost your love of wonder and magic!!!

Ummmm...waiting for that reciepe.... I don't bake much and am always counting calories...but will (happily) make an exception for your Pear Struedel!!!!!!

Love to you and the *Adorable One*,

  13. what a beautiful ride down memory lane — and so grateful that that gorgeous carousel is still there. the magic of riding on a steed such as yours is something every child loves to do — how lovely is that that your guy is still there! this reminds me of bandstands my family used to go to in summertime. a small group would play ragtime jazz around the 4th of july and we'd dance around and around the bandstand in circles.

we can all use a spin on a carousel now and then, don't we robin? thank you for sharing yours <3

  14. I can't help but wonder if I rode this when we were stationed at The Presidio? Because the animals look awfully FAMILIAR! (and yeah, there is a huge difference in carousel animals, design, quality.....)
I mean, this post makes me feel like I have been there....if only one of my folks were alive to tell me.
Beautiful craftsmanship on this; I love a carousel that has been lovingly preserved and is still active, because that's when all the creatures come to life, isn't it???

    XXOO~~

I love this carousel! It is extremely beautiful and so nice the same thing which you have such dear memories of is still there and in tip top shape!
And the variety of animals and such exotic one, it must have been hard to chose.......

    HAW dear♥
Still haven't send you the email I promised. I feel bad.......
