SAGAMIHARA, Japan -- A pet parakeet was returned to its Japanese owner Wednesday after the brainy bird told police its home address near Tokyo.
The male bird, called Piko-chan, escaped early Sunday morning from his home in the city of Sagamihara and remained at large before being coaxed into perching on the shoulder of a guest at a nearby hotel.
He was handed over to local police, but Piko-chan did not speak until Tuesday evening, when he blurted out the names of the city and district where his owner's home is located, a police spokesman said.
The stunned cops then listened as the parakeet produced the home's block and street number.
His owner, a 64-year-old woman, once lost another parakeet after it flew away and was determined not to make the same mistake.
"So the owner decided to teach the address to this parakeet after she bought it at a pet store two years ago," a police spokesman said. "The bird's name was found to be Piko-chan as it said, 'You're pretty, Piko-chan."
Just UPDATED...here is the REAL Piko-chan with his *owner*!!!! I LOVE Happy Endings!!!
How CUTE!!!
ReplyDeleteYou just made MY day, and Sweet Pea's too, as soon as the bird started singing/talking, The Pes was up front, listening and chattering back.
Thank you from BOTH of us!!!

If this doesn't make sense, please forgive me. I hate to type on the iPad but my machine is nearly formatted and this is my only two tin cans to the world. I read this the other night and I was so delighted both for the budgie and for the owner. I am happy about your trip and hope I can be happier when you tell me you are just going North, to a place called Portland :)
ReplyDeleteHave a safe journey, enjoy yourself, hug your chocolate baby and comeback home soon, renewed, and bring stories and photos please. Much love (this has taken about twenty minutes for me to type. Do you need a greater proof of loving friendship?)
Dear Allegra,
DeleteThank you so much for your good wishes for my *Big Apple* adventure....believe me, I KNOW you understand why I feel the need to go East for a bit.
And...I NEVER need proof of our friendship.....since *Day 1* I have felt so close to you!!!!
I won't have any internet access while I'm gone...(being the last person on the planet who does not have a laptop and/or and Iphone....)....but I will take lots of photos of my NY. Will ring you when I am back to say hello and check in on you and B. Loved...

Oh, I'd read that happy/amazing story in the news. What a smart birdie!
ReplyDeleteHave a great time in NY,,,is it Opera related,or just a getaway?
Whichever,,I can't imagine a better place to do it.
XO
Hi Babs... Birds are really SO SMART....these past few months as I have been out and about amongst them (while I rehabbed my knee), I have learned so much!
DeleteThe trip is a getaway...to a place I once knew very, very well...I hope to catch an opera during the Met's last week of performances...and revisit many of my favourite museums......and....have dinner with my Ex and see our *Fur Child*...Bofie, my beloved Chocolate Lab.
Back in a week!!! Behave! ;)
Love,
♥ Robin ♥
Oh isnt this just so adorable!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know I had 3 parakeet as a kid. One flew away twice. The first time I followed him from tree to tree all afternoon until he landed on a balcony somewhere. Unfortunately the second time he flew away forever and my heart was broken. He was such a special bird!
These videos are amazing!
Oh you are nearly going to the big apple!!!!!!
How exited you must be dear!
Hope to talk to you before you leave
♥M
Love your Happy Parakeet Story....the Sad one is....so sad...but perhaps he saw something he needed to explore! (Just like me returning to NY!) I am excited to walk the streets of the Big Apple again....I'm even excited to buy my one week Metro Card for the subway!

KJB,
DeleteYes, all these "Parakeet Tales* are great!
Somehow, I never had one... (but I did have a pet Lizard)....
Thank you for your wishes....I am looking forward to doing this....time to reclaim the * Adventurous Robin* again! You understand!
Love,
♥ Robin ♥
I love a happy ending story,too.
ReplyDeleteBut listening to the bird, I was thinking that if it was doing an accurate imitation of the owner, the owner sounds a wee but crazy.
The accent probably doesn't help clarify anything either!
DeleteNothing beats a Happy Ending!!!
Hugs,
♥ Robin ♥
Just happened upon your blog. What a great story about Piko-chan, and a cool video.
